Why Does the 3-2-1 Rule Work?

Each part addresses a different failure:

  • Multiple copies protect against one device failing.

RAID can keep a storage system available after certain drive failures, depending on its configuration. It does not by itself protect against accidental deletion, file corruption, malware, theft, fire, controller failure, or destruction of the entire array.

A RAID system can hold one of the copies in a 3-2-1 plan, but redundancy inside the array does not replace the other independent backups.

3-2-1 and Ransomware
