Ad Suitability Checks

Ad suitability checks are YouTube's upload and monetization reviews used to determine whether a video appears to meet the platform's advertiser-friendly content guidelines.

For eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program, the review helps determine whether a video can receive most ads, limited ads, or no ad earnings. The check can use automated systems, creator self-ratings, and in some cases human review.

Where Do Ad Suitability Checks Happen?

Ad suitability is reviewed during the upload workflow after an eligible creator turns on monetization and completes the Ad suitability questionnaire. The video's status then appears in YouTube Studio's Monetization column.

The review can also apply to:

  • Private videos
  • Unlisted videos
  • Public videos
  • Scheduled uploads
  • Scheduled live streams before they begin

YouTube recommends uploading important monetized releases as private or unlisted early enough for the review to finish before the public launch.

What Does YouTube Review?

YouTube's advertiser-friendly guidelines apply to the complete presentation of the content, including:

  • The video or live stream itself
  • Audio and spoken language
  • The title
  • The thumbnail
  • The description
  • Tags and other metadata

For scheduled live streams, YouTube says its systems review elements such as the title, description, thumbnail, and tags before the stream begins. Live content can still receive later review based on what happens during the broadcast.

What Do the Monetization Icons Mean?

StatusGeneral MeaningAdvertising Effect
CheckingYouTube is still reviewing ad suitabilityAds do not run while the check is in progress
Green or OnThe video appears to meet advertiser-friendly guidelinesEligible for most ads, subject to other monetization factors
Yellow or LimitedThe video does not meet all advertiser-friendly guidelinesSome brands may opt out, so earnings may be limited
Red or IneligibleThe video cannot currently be monetized, commonly because of copyright or another restrictionNo creator ad monetization under the displayed restriction
Gray or OffMonetization is turned off or the required module is not activeThe creator is not earning ads through that setting

The icon alone does not explain every issue. Hover over or open the notice in Studio to see whether the restriction involves ad suitability, copyright, revenue sharing, or another condition.

How Long Does an Ad Suitability Check Take?

YouTube says most checks finish within minutes. Its monetization icon guidance has historically stated that standard checks usually take less than 20 minutes and at most one hour.

Beginning in March 2025, YouTube added additional reviews for a small portion of uploads. These reviews may include a human reviewer and can take up to 24 hours. The video remains in a checking state until the decision is available.

Creators do not normally need to take action when a video remains in checking for up to 24 hours. For a time-sensitive monetized release, upload early rather than assuming every decision will be immediate.

Can You Publish Before the Check Finishes?

Yes. YouTube permits publication while checks continue. However, ads do not run while the video is in the checking state, and the eventual decision may be green, yellow, or red.

Publishing before the decision can reduce early revenue if the video's initial audience peak occurs while monetization is unavailable. Keeping the upload private, unlisted, or scheduled until the check finishes is usually safer for planned releases.

Ad Suitability Check vs. Self-Certification

ProcessWho Provides the Information?Purpose
Self-certificationThe creator rates the video through YouTube's questionnaireTell YouTube what advertiser-sensitive content appears
Automated ad suitability checkYouTube's systemsEvaluate the video and packaging against advertiser-friendly guidelines
Additional or human reviewA YouTube policy specialistProvide a more accurate decision when the system escalates or the creator appeals

Self-certification does not replace YouTube's review. Accurate creator ratings can influence how much YouTube relies on the creator's input for initial decisions.

What Content Can Cause Limited or No Ads?

YouTube's advertiser-friendly guidelines cover categories such as:

  • Inappropriate language
  • Violence
  • Adult content
  • Shocking content
  • Harmful or dangerous acts
  • Recreational drugs and drug-related content
  • Firearms-related content
  • Controversial issues
  • Sensitive events
  • Dishonest behavior
  • Inappropriate content for children and families
  • Tobacco-related content

Context matters. Educational, documentary, artistic, news, or non-graphic treatment may receive a different decision from promotional, graphic, instructional, or exploitative treatment of the same broad topic.

Community Guidelines vs. Advertiser-Friendly Guidelines

A video can be allowed on YouTube but receive limited or no ads. Community Guidelines determine whether content may remain on the platform. Advertiser-friendly guidelines determine whether brands are broadly willing to advertise around it.

A yellow monetization icon is not the same as a Community Guidelines strike. It means the video is less suitable for some advertisers, not necessarily prohibited from YouTube.

Can a Green Icon Change to Yellow?

Yes. YouTube says its systems continue scanning videos after the initial upload. A monetization status can change as additional information, automated review, human review, metadata edits, or viewer interaction affects the assessment.

YouTube says status generally stabilizes within 24 hours, although it can change later in some cases. A green result is therefore not an irreversible guarantee.

How to Request Human Review

  1. Open the affected video in YouTube Studio.
  2. Open the monetization or restriction notice.
  3. Review the Impact summary and advertiser-friendly guidelines.
  4. Select the appeal or request-review option when the video is eligible.
  5. Wait for a policy specialist to review the video and metadata.

YouTube says appeal reviews can take up to seven days. A creator generally receives one appeal, and the specialist's decision is final.

Should You Delete and Re-upload a Yellow Video?

No. YouTube explicitly says deleting and re-uploading does not help resolve an ad-suitability decision. The same content may receive the same result, and re-uploading discards the original video's URL, comments, views, and performance history.

Use the available appeal process when the video genuinely meets the guidelines. Do not appeal simply because limited ads are financially inconvenient.

How to Prepare for Ad Suitability Checks

  1. Review the current advertiser-friendly content guidelines before production.
  2. Consider the complete video, including audio, graphics, and background material.
  3. Write an accurate title and description.
  4. Use a thumbnail that does not exaggerate sensitive content.
  5. Complete self-certification honestly.
  6. Upload private or unlisted before the planned release.
  7. Wait for the check and any additional review to finish.
  8. Appeal only when you have reviewed the policy and believe the decision is incorrect.

Ad Suitability and Copyright Are Separate

The upload Checks page can review both ad suitability and copyright, but the systems answer different questions. A video can be advertiser-friendly while carrying a copyright claim, or copyright-clear while receiving limited ads because of sensitive subject matter.

Review each notice separately. Copyright ownership does not prove advertiser suitability, and advertiser suitability does not prove copyright permission.

Common Ad-Suitability Mistakes

  • Assuming a yellow icon means the video violated Community Guidelines.
  • Publishing during checking and expecting ads to run immediately.
  • Reviewing only the video footage while ignoring the title, thumbnail, and description.
  • Treating a green icon as permanent approval.
  • Deleting and re-uploading instead of using the appeal process.
  • Appealing without reading the relevant guideline.
  • Confusing copyright restrictions with advertiser suitability.
  • Assuming every review will finish within a few minutes.

YouTube is reviewing the video for ad suitability. Ads do not run while that check is in progress.

Can an ad suitability check take 24 hours?

Yes. YouTube says a small portion of videos may receive additional review that can take up to 24 hours.

Is a yellow icon a channel strike?

No. It is an advertiser-suitability limitation, not automatically a Community Guidelines or copyright strike.

Can I appeal a yellow icon?

Eligible videos can request human review when the creator believes the content meets the advertiser-friendly guidelines.
