Commerce Product Module
The YouTube Commerce Product Module is an optional YouTube Partner Program agreement that lets eligible creators earn from YouTube's fan-funding features.
Accepting the module can unlock channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks when the channel also meets each feature's individual eligibility requirements.
What Features Does the Module Cover?
| Fan-Funding Feature | How Viewers Support the Creator |
|---|---|
| Channel memberships | Recurring monthly payments for creator-provided membership perks |
| Super Chat | Paid highlighted messages in eligible live chats |
| Super Stickers | Paid animated images in eligible live chats |
| Super Thanks | A one-time animation and highlighted customizable comment on eligible videos or Shorts |
Is the Commerce Product Module YouTube Shopping?
No. Despite the word Commerce, the module covers fan funding—not the YouTube Shopping program for connected stores or affiliate products.
| System | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|
| Commerce Product Module | Enable fan-funding revenue from memberships and Supers |
| YouTube Shopping | Showcase the creator's products or tag products from eligible brands |
| Watch Page Monetization Module | Enable advertising and Premium revenue for eligible long-form and live content |
| Shorts Monetization Module | Enable Shorts Feed ad and Premium revenue for eligible Shorts |
Is CPM Here the Same as Advertising CPM?
No. YouTube abbreviates Commerce Product Module as CPM, but advertising CPM means cost per 1,000 ad impressions.
These terms are unrelated:
- Commerce Product Module: A creator contract for fan funding.
- CPM: An advertising metric representing advertiser spending per 1,000 ad impressions.
- Playback-based CPM: Advertiser spending per 1,000 monetized playbacks.
Commerce Product Module vs. Commerce Product Addendum
YouTube says the Commerce Product Module replaced the Commerce Product Addendum for new YPP creators.
Creators who previously signed the Commerce Product Addendum do not need to sign the newer module merely because the agreement name changed. The applicable agreement continues to govern their fan-funding use unless YouTube directs otherwise.
Who Is Eligible to Accept the Module?
YouTube's minimum fan-funding requirements include:
- Membership in the YouTube Partner Program
- Being at least 18 years old
- Living in a country or region where the individual feature is available
- Accepting and complying with the applicable Commerce Product Module or legacy addendum
- Meeting the separate requirements for each feature
Expanded YPP can provide fan-funding access at a lower threshold than the full ad-revenue level in supported countries, but the creator still must meet all relevant channel, policy, age, and regional conditions.
Does Accepting the Module Turn Everything On?
No. Accepting the agreement establishes the legal and revenue-sharing terms. The creator must then turn on each eligible fan-funding feature separately in YouTube Studio or the YouTube Studio app.
A channel may qualify for one feature but not another because memberships, Supers, and Super Thanks have additional requirements and availability limitations.
What Is the Creator Revenue Share?
YouTube's partner earnings overview says creators receive 70% of net revenues from:
- Channel memberships
- Super Chat
- Super Stickers
- Super Thanks
For memberships, YouTube describes the 70% as revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and other applicable fees—such as platform fees depending on the user's device and country—are deducted. YouTube currently covers payment-processing costs such as credit-card fees.
What Does 70% of Net Revenue Mean?
It does not mean the creator always receives exactly 70 cents from every displayed one-dollar purchase price.
The calculation can be affected by:
- Local sales taxes, VAT, or GST
- Mobile-app platform fees
- Country-specific pricing
- Currency conversion
- Refunds and chargebacks
- Revenue adjustments and recognized transaction value
- The creator's applicable agreement
The creator receives 70% after the specified deductions—not 70% of every sticker price before taxes and fees.
How Do Creators Accept the Module?
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Earn.
- Locate the available Commerce Product Module.
- Select Get started.
- Review the terms carefully.
- Accept the module.
- Open each eligible fan-funding feature and turn it on separately.
Creators working through a multi-channel network may also need the MCN to accept and comply with the applicable terms.
What Policies Apply?
Channels using the module must continue following:
- YouTube channel monetization policies
- YouTube Community Guidelines
- YouTube Terms of Service
- Copyright and fair-use policies
- Google AdSense program policies
- Individual channel-membership and Supers policies
- Applicable laws in the creator's location
Are Fan-Funding Purchases Donations?
YouTube explicitly says its fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools.
This distinction matters because:
- Payments are purchases made through platform products.
- Viewers may receive perks, visibility, animations, or highlighted messages.
- Refund and consumer-protection rules can apply.
- Income may receive different legal or tax treatment from charitable donations.
- Creators should not promise tax deductions to supporters.
Creators should seek appropriate legal or tax advice for their own business rather than describing all fan payments as donations.
What Are Commerce Content and Perks?
Commerce Content includes creator-provided benefits or material connected with fan-funding products, such as members-only posts, videos, live streams, badges, emoji, and stated perks.
The creator is responsible for providing and managing promised perks under YouTube's rules. Perks cannot include prohibited items, misleading promises, unlawful benefits, or rewards that violate membership policies.
What Happens If Access Is Terminated?
If YouTube terminates a channel's access to fan-funding products, the creator can lose the ability to earn through those features. YouTube says the creator is responsible for removing particular Commerce Content when removal is desired; YouTube is not responsible for automatically removing every perk or related item.
Memberships can enter a paused state in some situations, temporarily stopping payments and perk delivery. Long-term loss of access can end recurring memberships and trigger viewer communications or refund options.
Can a Channel Use the Module Without Ads?
Yes, in supported expanded-YPP markets a creator may qualify for fan funding before reaching the higher threshold for Watch Page and Shorts advertising revenue.
Accepting the Commerce Product Module does not automatically accept the Watch Page or Shorts Monetization Modules. YouTube's modular system lets eligible partners choose the earning opportunities available to them.
Does the Module Cover Gift Memberships?
Gift memberships operate through the channel membership system, so the creator needs channel-membership eligibility and the applicable Commerce Product agreement.
Paid gift transactions follow membership revenue treatment. YouTube-funded promotional gift memberships do not generate creator revenue.
Where Can Creators See Commerce Revenue?
In YouTube Studio Analytics, the Revenue tab can show earnings from memberships, Supers, and Super Thanks when data is available. Membership analytics can also separate normal and gifted membership activity.
Estimated earnings can change before finalization. Finalized creator payments appear through AdSense for YouTube under the normal payment schedule and thresholds.
Commerce Product Module vs. Fan Funding
Fan funding is the category of creator-support features. The Commerce Product Module is the contract that governs the creator's ability to earn from those products.
A creator can discuss fan funding conceptually without having accepted the module. The channel cannot earn through the covered YouTube products until it is eligible, accepts the agreement, and turns on the individual features.
Common Commerce-Module Mistakes
- Confusing the module with YouTube Shopping.
- Confusing Commerce Product Module CPM with advertising CPM.
- Assuming acceptance turns on every fan-funding feature automatically.
- Interpreting 70% as 70% of the sticker price before taxes and fees.
- Calling memberships and Supers charitable donations.
- Assuming Watch Page and Shorts ad revenue are included.
- Ignoring separate feature eligibility and regional availability.
- Promising perks the creator cannot consistently deliver.
