The exposure triangle is a teaching model that explains how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together to determine recorded brightness and the visual character of an image.

The triangle is useful because changing one setting often requires compensation from another. A creator who chooses a faster shutter speed to freeze motion may need a wider aperture, a higher ISO, more light, or some combination of those changes to maintain the intended exposure.

How aperture affects exposure

Exposure triangle versus exposure compensation

Exposure compensation tells an automatic or semi-automatic camera mode to make the image brighter or darker than its meter's default target. The camera then adjusts one or more triangle settings according to the selected mode.

For example, in aperture priority the creator chooses the aperture, and the camera may change shutter speed and ISO. Adding negative exposure compensation tells the system to deliver a darker result.

Exposure compensation does not create an additional side of the triangle. It changes the target used by the camera's automation.

Exposure triangle versus brightness in editing

Increasing exposure or brightness in editing is not equivalent to capturing more light.

Post-production can remap recorded values, but it cannot restore fully clipped highlights or create clean shadow detail that was never captured. Raising a dark clip may reveal noise, compression artifacts, banding, or color shifts.

Good capture gives editing software better information to work with. Dynamic range, bit depth, codec, and picture profile determine how far a file can be adjusted before it breaks down.
