A memory card reader is a device that lets a computer, phone, tablet, or other host read from and write to removable memory cards. Creators use card readers to transfer footage and photos without connecting the camera directly.

CFexpress Type A, Type B, CompactFlash, CFast, SD, and microSD are not interchangeable merely because a multi-card product supports more than one format.

Card, Reader, Port, and Cable Speed

The effective transfer rate is limited by the slowest relevant component:

  • The memory card's read performance
  • The reader's supported card interface
  • The reader's USB or Thunderbolt connection
  • The cable or adapter
  • The computer port and shared bus
  • The destination drive's write performance
  • The number and size of files being copied

A fast card in a slow reader will transfer at the slower reader's rate. A fast reader connected to a slow port will also operate below its advertised maximum.

UHS-I vs. UHS-II Readers

UHS-II SD cards use a second row of contacts for a faster compatible interface. An official UHS-II reader can use those contacts, while a UHS-I reader generally accesses the card through the first row at a lower compatible speed.

The SD Association describes the first row of pins on UHS-II cards as providing backward compatibility with conventional host interfaces. Backward compatibility does not mean full UHS-II performance in a UHS-I reader.

USB-C Does Not Guarantee Reader Speed

USB-C identifies the connector shape. A USB-C card reader can use different USB generations and transfer rates. The computer's port and cable must support the same or a compatible data mode.

Read the actual interface specification—such as USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB4, or Thunderbolt—rather than treating the connector as a speed rating.

Do Multi-Slot Readers Transfer Every Card at Full Speed?

Not necessarily. Some readers can access several slots at once, while others support only one active card. Even when simultaneous transfer is available, the slots may share one USB connection and divide its bandwidth.

For productions that ingest several cards at once, check whether the reader, hub, computer port, destination storage, and copying software can sustain the combined workload.

How to Transfer Files Safely

  1. Stop recording and wait for the camera's write indicator before removing the card.
  2. Insert the card in the correct orientation without forcing it.
  3. Copy files to the working drive rather than editing the only copy directly from the card.
  4. Verify that the copied folders, file counts, and critical clips open correctly.
  5. Create an additional backup before erasing the original card.
  6. Eject or safely remove the card or reader when the operating system requires it.
  7. Format the card in the recording device after the copies are verified.

What Should You Look for in a Card Reader?

  • Card format: Match full-size SD, microSD, CFexpress Type A, Type B, CFast, or other media exactly.
  • Capacity support: Older readers may not support newer SDHC, SDXC, or SDUC standards.
  • Bus support: Confirm UHS-I, UHS-II, SD Express, or the relevant high-speed interface.
  • Host connection: Check USB generation, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or built-in interface details.
  • Simultaneous access: Important when ingesting multiple cards.
  • Cable design: A removable cable can be replaced; an integrated cable can reduce loose pieces.
  • Physical protection: Deep slots, caps, and cases can help protect pins and contacts during travel.

Common Memory-Card-Reader Problems

  • Card is not detected: The reader may not support the card family, capacity standard, file system, or adapter.
  • Transfer is slow: The card, reader, port, hub, cable, or destination drive may be the bottleneck.
