Monthly Audience

Monthly audience is YouTube's estimate of the total unique viewers who watched a channel's content during the previous 28 days. YouTube calculates the metric every day using a rolling 28-day window.

It is designed to help creators estimate the size of their active audience rather than relying only on total subscriber count.

How Is Monthly Audience Calculated?

For each date shown, YouTube looks backward over the preceding 28 days and estimates the number of distinct viewers who watched channel content during that window.

This means monthly audience is:

  • Rolling: The window moves forward every day.
  • Twenty-eight days: It is not a calendar month and does not always match 30 or 31 days.
  • Estimated: YouTube uses available data to estimate individual viewers.
  • Cross-format: Viewer metrics can include videos, Shorts, live content, and uploaded channel videos.

What Happens When You Change the Date Range?

YouTube notes that monthly audience still uses the previous 28 days from the most recent day in the selected range. Choosing a 90-day Analytics range does not turn monthly audience into a 90-day unique-viewer total.

For example, a monthly-audience point dated August 1 represents the estimated active audience from the 28-day period ending on August 1, not every viewer from an arbitrary longer range.

Monthly Audience vs. Unique Viewers

MetricTime WindowPrimary Use
Monthly audienceRolling previous 28 days from each reported dateTrack active audience size consistently over time
Unique viewersThe selected Analytics date rangeEstimate distinct viewers for a chosen campaign or period
ViewsThe selected date rangeCount legitimate plays, including multiple views by viewers

Monthly audience and unique viewers can be related, but they should not be assumed to match when their date windows differ.

Monthly Audience vs. Subscribers

Subscribers are accounts that have chosen to follow the channel. Monthly audience measures people who actually watched during the rolling 28-day period.

Monthly audience can be lower than subscriber count because many subscribers do not watch every month. It can also be higher because a large portion of viewers may watch without subscribing.

YouTube describes monthly audience as a more accurate indicator of active audience size than subscriber count alone.

How Is Monthly Audience Segmented?

YouTube divides monthly audience into three watch-behavior segments:

SegmentDefinition
New viewersWatched the channel for the first time in the applicable period, including certain viewers without usable recent history
Casual viewersWatched at least monthly for one to five months in the past year
Regular viewersWatched at least monthly for more than six months in the past year

The segment mix helps separate discovery from emerging and established loyalty.

Where Can You Find Monthly Audience?

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Analytics.
  3. Open the Audience tab.
  4. Review the monthly-audience metric and its watch-behavior breakdown.

YouTube may display the metric in key-metric cards or other audience reports depending on platform and account availability.

How to Interpret Monthly Audience Growth

Growing monthly audience means more distinct people watched during the latest rolling window than during earlier windows. Possible contributors include:

  • New uploads bringing discovery traffic
  • A breakout or evergreen video continuing to attract viewers
  • More casual and regular viewers returning
  • Stronger performance across Shorts, live streams, and long-form video
  • Seasonal audience demand
  • Collaborations, external exposure, and promotions

Use the segment breakdown and traffic-source reports to understand whether growth came primarily from discovery, returning behavior, or both.

Why Can Monthly Audience Drop?

  • A high-performing video's strongest days left the rolling 28-day window.
  • The channel uploaded less frequently.
  • Seasonal demand declined.
  • Fewer new viewers discovered the channel.
  • Casual or regular viewers returned less often.
  • A temporary event or trend stopped producing traffic.

A drop does not necessarily mean subscribers were removed or that YouTube applied a penalty. Rolling-window metrics can decline when older strong days are replaced by newer weaker days.

How to Use Monthly Audience Strategically

  • Track the direction over several rolling windows rather than reacting to one day.
  • Compare changes with publication dates and major videos.
  • Review the new, casual, and regular viewer mix.
  • Compare active audience with subscriber count.
  • Study which content is popular with different audience segments.
  • Separate content formats because viewing behavior differs across videos, Shorts, and live streams.
  • Use YouTube Advanced Mode for deeper selected-range analysis when needed.

Common Monthly-Audience Mistakes

  • Calling it a calendar-month metric.
  • Assuming a selected 90-day range produces 90-day monthly audience.
  • Treating monthly audience as the same as subscriber count.
  • Adding daily monthly-audience values together.
  • Assuming every format contributes equally.
  • Interpreting a rolling-window decline as proof of an algorithm penalty.
  • Comparing monthly audience directly with a unique-viewer number from a different date range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is monthly audience based on the last 30 days?

No. YouTube defines it using the previous 28 days.

Does monthly audience reset at the start of the month?

No. It is calculated daily using a rolling window.

Can monthly audience be higher than subscribers?

Yes. Many people watch without subscribing, so the active audience can exceed subscriber count.

Does monthly audience count repeat views?

It estimates distinct viewers rather than adding every playback as another audience member.
