Notifications Traffic
Notifications traffic is YouTube Analytics traffic from notifications and emails sent to a channel's subscribers.
YouTube separates this traffic into notifications sent to eligible belled subscribers and other app notifications such as personalized notifications, emails, Inbox notices, and digests.
Types of Notifications Traffic
| Subtype | YouTube's Current Definition |
|---|---|
| Notifications to belled subscribers | Traffic from subscribers who selected All notifications and enabled YouTube notifications on their account and device |
| Other app notifications | Traffic from personalized notifications, email notifications, Inbox, and digests |
The combined Notifications source can include both categories.
Who Is Eligible for Bell Notifications?
A subscriber generally needs to:
- Subscribe to the channel
- Select All notifications through the channel bell
- Have YouTube notifications enabled for the Google Account
- Have notifications enabled on at least one device
- Remain eligible under YouTube's delivery and activity systems
Ringing the channel bell does not guarantee that device or account settings permit delivery.
Where Can Creators See Notification Traffic?
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Analytics.
- Open the Content tab or a video's Reach tab.
- Review Notifications in the traffic-source report.
- For an individual video, find the Bell notifications sent card when the channel has enough eligible subscribers.
- Open the Audience tab for the Subscriber bell notifications card.
Subscriber Bell Notifications Card
The Audience-tab card shows:
- The percentage of subscribers who selected All notifications
- The percentage who selected All notifications and also enabled YouTube notifications for their account and device
YouTube says the card shows current metrics. Historical values are not available, and the data has a reporting delay.
Bell Notifications Sent Card
The video-level Reach card can show:
- Bell notifications sent: Notifications sent to eligible subscribers
- Notifications CTR: The percentage who clicked the bell notification
- Views from bell notifications: Views from people who clicked and immediately watched
Views from people who saw a notification but watched later through another path are not included in the immediate views-from-bell-notifications measure.
Notifications CTR vs. Impressions CTR
| Metric | Exposure | Viewer Context |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications CTR | Bell notification | The viewer may be working, driving, sleeping, or otherwise unavailable |
| Impressions CTR | Registered thumbnail impression on YouTube | The viewer is actively using YouTube and looking at content options |
YouTube says it is typical for Notifications CTR to be lower than impressions CTR. The metrics should not be judged against identical benchmarks.
Why Don't All Subscribers Receive Notifications?
- They selected Personalized or None rather than All.
- YouTube notifications are disabled on their account or device.
- The channel reached the maximum of three upload and live-stream notifications in 24 hours.
- The creator disabled notifications for the upload.
- The video's visibility changed before delivery completed.
- The subscriber count changed significantly near publication.
- Reporting delays affected the displayed percentage.
- YouTube's current activity-based delivery systems limited push delivery to inactive subscribers.
Current Push-Notification Changes
In 2026, TeamYouTube announced changes intended to reduce push notifications to inactive subscribers. Viewers who have not engaged with notifications or watched the channel recently may continue receiving Inbox notifications but stop receiving device push notifications.
Creators may therefore see lower Bell notifications sent totals even when subscribers previously selected All. Notification delivery remains a changing platform system rather than a guaranteed channel-owned mailing list.
Three-Notification Daily Limit
YouTube limits viewers to a maximum of three upload and live-stream notifications from one channel during a 24-hour period.
Publishing more than three videos quickly can result in some notifications not being sent. Creators can choose which ordinary uploads should notify subscribers by unchecking Publish to subscriptions feed and notify subscribers.
What Happens When Notifications Are Disabled for an Upload?
YouTube says subscribers will not receive notifications and the upload will not appear in their Subscription feed through that publication action.
The Bell notifications sent card shows 0% sent. The public video can still receive traffic from Home, Search, Suggested, Channel Pages, External, and other sources.
Notifications Traffic vs. Subscriptions Feed
The Subscriptions feed is classified under Browse Features. Notifications is a separate traffic source.
A subscriber can:
- See the video in the Subscriptions feed without clicking a notification.
- Click a notification without browsing the Subscriptions feed.
- Ignore the notification and later find the video on Home.
Notifications Traffic vs. Direct or Unknown
Trackable notification clicks can appear under Notifications. Some copied, forwarded, or unidentified notification-related paths can be classified differently.
Use the notification-specific card and traffic-source breakdown rather than estimating notification impact from Direct or Unknown views.
Does a Notification Guarantee a View?
No. Delivery only creates an opportunity. A viewer may:
- Dismiss it
- Read it but not click
- Click later through another YouTube surface
- Be busy when it arrives
- Decide the title or topic is not relevant
- Have too many notifications
How to Improve Notification Performance
- Publish topics subscribers expect from the channel.
- Use clear titles and thumbnails.
- Avoid sending several notifications close together.
- Choose which uploads deserve notification priority.
- Schedule releases at reasonable times for the core audience.
- Avoid repeatedly asking viewers to ring the bell without explaining the benefit.
- Build consistent viewer habits rather than relying only on pushes.
Should Creators Ask Viewers to Turn on All Notifications?
They can, but the request should be specific and honest. Examples:
- "Turn on All notifications if you want each weekly tutorial."
- "Enable alerts if you want to catch the live Q&A."
- "Use the bell for immediate product-update videos."
Notification traffic is only one source. A healthy channel should also build repeat viewing through Home, Search, Suggested, playlists, and audience loyalty.
How to Evaluate Notification Traffic
- Review eligible subscribers and notifications sent.
- Compare Notifications CTR with the channel's own typical range.
- Review views from immediate bell clicks.
- Check the Notifications traffic-source total.
- Compare watch time and retention with other sources.
- Review whether notification-heavy viewers return.
- Compare ordinary uploads, live streams, and Premieres separately.
Common Notifications-Traffic Mistakes
- Expecting every subscriber to receive every notification.
- Combining Notifications with the Subscriptions feed.
- Comparing Notifications CTR directly with thumbnail CTR.
- Ignoring account and device settings.
- Publishing more than three notifying uploads in 24 hours.
- Treating bell selection as permanent guaranteed push delivery.
- Assuming every notified viewer watches immediately.
- Judging a video's success only by notification traffic.

What counts as Notifications traffic?
Traffic from subscriber notifications and emails, including belled notifications and other app or email notifications.
Why did fewer than 100% of eligible notifications send?
Limits, settings, privacy changes, subscriber changes, activity-based delivery, or reporting delays can reduce the displayed total.
Is Notifications CTR the same as thumbnail CTR?
No. Notifications CTR measures clicks on bell notifications; impressions CTR measures clicks after eligible YouTube thumbnail impressions.
Do notifications appear in the Subscriptions feed source?
No. The Subscriptions feed is part of Browse Features, while notification clicks have their own traffic source.
