A shotgun microphone is a highly directional microphone that uses a narrow pickup pattern and an interference tube to reduce sound arriving from the sides. It is commonly used for film dialogue, interviews, documentaries, outdoor recording, sports, wildlife, and creator videos where the microphone needs to stay outside the frame.

How a shotgun microphone works

Longer interference tubes can maintain stronger directionality to lower frequencies, but they also become larger, harder to position indoors, and potentially more sensitive to reflected sound arriving from complex angles.

Shotgun microphone "reach" is a myth

A shotgun microphone does not amplify a source based on distance. The voice still becomes quieter relative to room reflections and environmental noise as the microphone moves farther away.

What the mic can do is reject some competing sound from other directions. That may improve the signal-to-noise ratio, but it cannot replace close placement.

For a talking-head video, a shotgun boomed roughly just outside the frame can sound significantly better than the same microphone mounted on the camera across the room.

The best position is normally the closest location that stays outside the composition and maintains a clear aim at the speaker.

How to aim a shotgun microphone

Point the microphone toward the mouth, upper chest, or the region where the voice remains consistent as the person moves. The exact aim depends on the microphone, room, framing, and tone desired.

Useful placement practices include:

  • Keep the capsule as close as the shot allows.
  • Aim the main axis directly at the speaker.
  • Avoid pointing the rear or side lobes toward a loud noise source.
  • Rehearse head turns and body movement.
  • Monitor with headphones from the recording device.
  • Use a stand or operator to follow moving speakers.
  • Keep the microphone and boom shadows out of the frame.

A shotgun that is only a few inches off-axis can sound thinner or less natural than one accurately aimed.

Shotgun microphones indoors

Shotgun microphones can work indoors, but reflective rooms require care. Walls, ceilings, floors, windows, and tables send delayed copies of the voice toward the interference tube from many angles. The tube may cancel some frequencies more than others, creating hollow or colored dialogue.

A short hypercardioid or supercardioid microphone without a long interference tube is often preferred in small reflective rooms because its off-axis response may sound more natural.

That does not mean every indoor shotgun recording fails. Results improve when:

  • The room is treated or softly furnished.

  • The mic is close to the speaker.
  • The ceiling and nearby surfaces are not highly reflective.

Outdoor spaces often have fewer nearby reflections, making an interference tube effective for isolating dialogue. The main challenges become wind, traffic, crowds, handling noise, and changing distance.

Wind protection is essential. A bare microphone or thin foam cover is often insufficient in moving air.

  • Secure the cable so it does not tap the pole or mount.
  • Avoid gripping or rubbing the boom.
  • Keep stabilization motors and camera fans away from the mic.
  • Use low-cut filtering carefully when rumble is present.

A low-cut filter can reduce some vibration and wind energy, but it cannot repair severe handling noise.
