A stream key is a private credential that connects a live encoder to a YouTube live-stream destination. YouTube describes it as the stream's "password and address" because it helps identify where an incoming feed belongs and authorizes YouTube to accept that feed.

Creators normally copy the key from Live Control Room into streaming software or a hardware encoder. Anyone who obtains an active key may be able to send video to the associated live setup, so it should not be displayed, posted, or shared casually.

How a YouTube stream key works

In a manual encoder setup, YouTube provides two important connection values:

  1. A stream URL, sometimes called the server URL or ingest URL.
  2. A stream key, which identifies and authorizes the incoming stream.

The encoder combines those values when it sends encoded video and audio to YouTube, commonly through RTMP or encrypted RTMPS. YouTube receives the feed, associates it with the correct stream configuration, processes it, and publishes it to the viewer-facing watch page.

The stream key does not create the video by itself. The creator still configures the title, visibility, audience, monetization, latency, and other settings in YouTube Studio.

A common mistake is sending the stream key to a guest when the guest only needs the watch-page URL. The key belongs in the production workflow, not in audience communications.

Where to find a YouTube stream key

For an encoder stream, creators can open YouTube Studio, choose Create, select Go live, and open the Stream area of Live Control Room. The stream key appears under the stream settings and can be copied into the encoder.

The encoder may label the field Stream Key, Key, or something similar. It may also provide a YouTube service preset that fills in the server URL automatically.

Some streaming applications let creators sign in to YouTube directly. In that workflow, the application can connect through account authorization, so the creator may not need to copy and paste a key manually. That does not mean the destination no longer needs authorization; the application is handling more of the connection process.

Default and custom stream keys

YouTube can load settings from a creator's previous live stream, including the stream key. This can let the same encoder configuration work again without replacing the key before every broadcast.

Creators can also make a custom stream key from the "Select stream key" menu. A custom key is useful when a creator wants a named, reusable configuration for a particular encoder, studio, resolution, or recurring production.

A reusable key is convenient, but it should not be treated as harmless. The longer a credential remains active in multiple devices or services, the more important access control becomes.

How to protect a stream key

  • Never show the key in a screen recording, screenshot, tutorial, or live desktop capture.
  • Avoid pasting it into public chat, email threads with unnecessary recipients, or shared documents.
  • Limit access to people who operate the stream.
  • Remove old integrations and devices that no longer need the credential.
  • Use RTMPS when supported so the contribution feed is encrypted in transit.
  • Reset the key immediately if it appears on screen or is sent to the wrong person.

A stream key is separate from a Google account password. Exposing it does not necessarily reveal the account password, but it can still allow unauthorized broadcasting and should be treated as a serious production-security issue.

How to reset a compromised stream key

YouTube currently lets a channel owner or manager reset the key in Live Control Room:

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Go live.
  2. Select the Stream tab.
  3. Find the Stream key section.
  4. Choose Reset next to the hidden key.
  5. Copy the new key into the encoder or streaming service.
  6. Remove the old key anywhere it was saved.

YouTube says editors and viewers do not have permission to reset a stream key. After a reset, an encoder that still contains the old key will no longer connect correctly.

Stream keys and scheduled streams

When a creator schedules a live stream, the public event and the incoming encoder feed are connected through the selected stream settings. At broadcast time, the creator starts sending video from the encoder, waits for the preview in Live Control Room, and then starts the public stream when manual start is enabled.

This separation is useful: a stream key identifies the incoming production feed, while the scheduled event supplies the public title, thumbnail, reminder page, and other viewer-facing details.

Stream keys for horizontal and vertical live streams

YouTube's current dual-stream workflow can deliver horizontal and vertical live formats together. When a creator uses a third-party encoder to produce both layouts, YouTube instructs the creator to use a second key for the vertical stream and send each format to the corresponding key.

The two formats can still share one viewer URL, one notification, and one live chat. The separate ingest key helps YouTube receive the correct version for each layout.
