Ultra-Low Latency

Ultra-Low Latency is YouTube Live's most responsive selectable latency mode for encoder streams. It is designed for broadcasts where creators and viewers need to react to each other quickly, such as live Q&As, coaching, auctions, interactive games, and audience-controlled events.

YouTube says most viewers of an Ultra-low Latency stream experience less than five seconds of stream latency. That is a typical platform target, not a guarantee that every viewer will see the same delay.

How Ultra-Low Latency works

Every live player stores a small amount of upcoming video data before displaying it. This read-ahead buffer helps playback continue when network speed briefly changes.

Ultra-low keeps less buffered data than Low Latency or Normal Latency. With fewer seconds waiting in the player, the audience sees the creator sooner and chat responses feel more immediate.

The trade-off is reduced protection. A short upload disruption, ingest problem, or viewer-network slowdown can cause buffering more quickly because the player has less saved video available.

The fastest mode is not automatically the highest-quality mode. Normal Latency supports all resolutions and live features and is designed to minimize viewer buffering.

What "under five seconds" means

YouTube's wording applies to most viewers. Actual delay can vary because of:

  • Encoding time and production hardware.
  • The creator's upload route and connection stability.
  • The selected stream bitrate.
  • YouTube ingest, transcoding, and distribution.
  • The viewer's network, device, and selected playback quality.
  • Pausing, buffering, or watching behind the live edge with Live DVR.

One viewer may be three seconds behind while another is seven seconds behind. A viewer who pauses the stream can remain farther from live even though the creator selected Ultra-low.

When to use Ultra-Low Latency

Ultra-low is most useful when the timing of viewer responses changes the broadcast:

  • Live interviews with audience questions.
  • Coaching or instruction with immediate feedback.
  • Auctions and limited-time bidding.
  • Interactive games controlled by chat.
  • Live troubleshooting or technical support.
  • Watch-alongs where reactions must stay close to the source event.
  • Community streams built around rapid conversation.

For a concert, worship service, keynote, or other primarily one-way presentation, the responsiveness may provide less value than the stability of a slower mode.

Ultra-Low Latency limitations

No 4K support

YouTube's current documentation says Ultra-low Latency does not support 4K resolution. Creators who need a 2160p broadcast should use Normal Latency.

Greater buffering risk

YouTube warns that Ultra-low may increase the chance of viewer buffering. The mode cannot hide brief connection changes as effectively as a larger playback buffer.

Live automatic captions are unavailable

YouTube's current automatic-caption documentation says live automatic captions are available only for Normal Latency streams. A creator who depends on YouTube-generated live captions should not assume they will appear in Ultra-low.

This limitation is specific to YouTube's live automatic captions. Professional caption workflows may have separate requirements that should be tested with the chosen encoder and stream configuration.

Network and bitrate requirements

YouTube warns that live-ingestion problems affect viewers more in Ultra-low mode. A connection that merely averages the target bitrate may still be unstable if it has packet loss, jitter, short bandwidth drops, or competing traffic.

Creators should:

  1. Use a wired connection when practical.
  2. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain continuously.
  3. Leave upload capacity above the encoded video and audio rate.
  4. Test with realistic movement, overlays, and audio.
  5. Monitor Live Control Room and the encoder for warnings.
  6. Reduce the bitrate or resolution if dropped frames or ingest errors appear.

YouTube currently recommends AV1 or H.265/HEVC for the best quality and stability at a given bitrate when the production workflow supports them. H.264 remains widely compatible, but may need more bitrate to preserve similar detail.

How to select Ultra-Low Latency

For an eligible encoder stream:

  1. Open YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Create and then Go live.
  3. Create or select the stream in Live Control Room.
  4. Open Stream settings.
  5. Find Stream latency.
  6. Select Ultra-low latency.
  7. Confirm that the resolution and production features are compatible.
  8. Run a private or unlisted test before the public event.

YouTube says creators cannot manually select the latency mode for webcam and mobile streams because those workflows are automatically configured for interactivity.

When Low Latency is the better option

Use Low Latency instead when conversation matters but a few extra seconds will not damage the experience. It gives most viewers less than 10 seconds of delay while offering a more balanced buffer than Ultra-low.

Low can be a better choice when:

  • Viewers report frequent buffering in Ultra-low.
  • The creator's upload connection is stable but not highly resilient.
  • Polls and occasional chat responses are the main interactions.
  • The event serves viewers with varied devices and connections.

When Normal Latency is the better option

Normal is the better choice when the production needs 4K, live automatic captions, maximum feature support, or the lowest buffering risk. It is also appropriate when the creator does not need to respond to viewers in real time.

How to troubleshoot Ultra-low buffering

  • Verify the encoder is not exceeding YouTube's recommended bitrate.
  • Check for network-dropped frames separately from encoding lag.
  • Reduce bitrate before reducing visual quality in several unrelated settings at once.
  • Test a wired route and stop competing uploads.
  • Compare the same production in Low Latency.
  • Ask whether buffering affects all viewers or only particular networks and devices.
  • Confirm viewers are at the live edge after pausing or reconnecting.
