Unlisted Video
An Unlisted video is a YouTube video that does not appear as an ordinary Public upload on the creator's channel or in YouTube search, but can be watched by anyone who has the link.
Viewers do not need a Google Account to watch an Unlisted video. Anyone with the URL can also reshare it, which means Unlisted is hidden from ordinary discovery—not confidential or access-controlled.

Is Unlisted Secure?
Unlisted is not a secure video-hosting or digital-rights-management system. The link can be:
- Forwarded
- Posted publicly
- Included in a shared document
- Exposed through browser history or analytics
- Copied from an embed
- Added to a Public playlist
- Captured through screen recording
Do not use Unlisted for material that would cause serious harm if it spread, such as client records, tax documents, private medical information, passwords, internal investigations, or unreleased confidential business data.
Can Viewers Comment?
Yes. YouTube's visibility comparison says Unlisted videos can be commented on. The creator can still moderate, hold, limit, or disable comments using the video's comment settings.
Comments are one reason creators may choose Unlisted instead of Private for client reviews, classroom discussions, or feedback sessions.
Can an Unlisted Video Be Embedded?
Yes, when embedding is allowed. Unlisted videos are commonly embedded in:

The embed does not prevent the link or video ID from being discovered and shared. Use a platform with stronger authentication when access must remain limited.
Can Unlisted Videos Appear in Search?
YouTube says they do not normally show in search unless someone adds the Unlisted video to a Public playlist. The video can then become visible through that public context.
This is an important exception to the phrase "not searchable." Unlisted reduces ordinary discovery but does not guarantee that the link or video will never become publicly discoverable.
Do Unlisted Videos Notify Subscribers?
No. YouTube's visibility table says Unlisted videos do not appear in the subscriber feed. They also do not function like normal Public uploads that can generate upload notifications.
If an existing Unlisted video is later made Public for the first time, it can be published to subscriber surfaces under YouTube's current settings and notification limits.

Changing an Unlisted Video to Public
Changing the video to Public normally keeps its existing URL, views, comments, and Analytics history. It becomes available to anyone and can appear on the channel and discovery surfaces.

- Review comments that were added during the Unlisted period.
- Confirm the title and thumbnail are appropriate for a broader audience.
- Finish checks and processing.
- Review chapters, cards, captions, and end screens.

Changing an Unlisted Video to Private
When changed to Private, the ordinary Unlisted link stops working for unapproved viewers and existing embeds no longer function for the general audience. Comments become unavailable while the video is Private.
The creator must specifically invite approved accounts to provide Private access.
Older Unlisted Videos
YouTube made many Unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 Private as part of a 2021 security update, unless the creator opted out. Videos uploaded on or after January 1, 2017 were not affected by that specific change.
Creators maintaining old embeds or archived links should check the current visibility and whether the original URL still works.
Unlisted vs. Members-Only or Paid Access
Unlisted does not verify payment, membership, employment, course enrollment, or license status. A customer can forward the URL to a non-customer.
