Video Visibility

Video visibility is the YouTube setting that controls who can watch a video and where it can appear across the platform. YouTube's main video visibility options are Public, Unlisted, Private, and Scheduled.

Visibility affects discoverability, sharing, comments, subscriber feeds, search results, recommendations, embeds, and access. It does not override copyright, monetization, age, Community Guidelines, or other platform restrictions.

YouTube Video Visibility Options

SettingWho Can Watch? Can It Appear in Search or Recommendations?Comments
PublicAnyone on YouTubeYes, when YouTube chooses to surface itAvailable when the creator's comment settings allow them
UnlistedAnyone with the linkNormally no, except limited exposure such as inclusion in a public playlistAvailable
PrivateThe creator and specifically invited accountsNoNot available
ScheduledPrivate before the scheduled time; public afterwardOnly after it becomes publicPublic-video behavior after publication

Where Do You Set Video Visibility?

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content.
  3. Choose the video.
  4. Open the Visibility setting.
  5. Select Public, Private, Unlisted, or Schedule.
  6. Save or publish the change.

Visibility can be selected during upload or changed later. Some live-stream and Premiere workflows use related visibility controls.

Visibility vs. Video Restrictions

Setting or NoticeWhat It Controls
VisibilityThe audience and discovery access chosen by the creator
Copyright restrictionWhether a rights holder blocks, tracks, or monetizes matched material
Age restrictionWhich signed-in viewers may watch based on age and account conditions
Ad suitabilityWhether the content qualifies for broad advertiser demand
Community Guidelines actionWhether YouTube limits, removes, or penalizes content under platform rules

A video can be Public but blocked in some countries by a copyright claim. A Private video can still be reviewed by YouTube systems and human reviewers for copyright, ad suitability, and abuse prevention.

Does Public Mean YouTube Will Promote the Video?

No. Public visibility makes a video eligible to appear on the channel, in search, related-video lists, recommendations, and subscriber feeds. It does not guarantee that YouTube will distribute it broadly.

Actual reach depends on factors such as:

  • Viewer interest and satisfaction
  • Topic demand and competition
  • Title and thumbnail packaging
  • Traffic source
  • Watch behavior
  • Channel and audience history
  • Policy and rights restrictions

Visibility and Subscriber Notifications

Public publication can make a video appear in subscriber feeds and may send notifications. Notifications are not guaranteed to reach every subscriber.

Creators can uncheck Publish to subscriptions feed and notify subscribers for an uploaded video. When disabled, subscribers do not receive upload notifications and the video does not appear in their Subscription feed through that publication action.

YouTube also limits viewers to a maximum of three upload and live-stream notifications from one channel in a 24-hour period.

Visibility and Comments

  • Public: Comments can be enabled, held, limited, or disabled according to the video's comment settings.
  • Unlisted: Comments can be available even though the video is not publicly listed.
  • Private: Comments are not available.
  • Scheduled: Comment behavior changes when the video becomes public; a Premiere can also include live chat.

Visibility and comment moderation are separate settings, except that private videos do not support comments.

Visibility and Embedding

Public and Unlisted videos can generally be embedded when embedding is allowed. Private videos cannot be treated as ordinary link-accessible embeds because only approved signed-in accounts can view them.

Unlisted is often used for courses, client previews, internal pages, and portfolios, but anyone who obtains the link can reshare it. It should not be treated as a secure access-control system.

Can You Change Visibility Later?

Yes. Changing visibility usually preserves the existing video's URL, views, comments, and Analytics history. However, access and discovery change immediately or after processing.

  • Public to Private removes public access and disables comments.
  • Public to Unlisted removes ordinary channel and discovery listing while preserving link access.
  • Unlisted to Public opens the video to anyone and can place it on the channel and subscriber surfaces.
  • Private to Public publishes the existing upload.
  • Scheduled to Public publishes it immediately.

Default Visibility Settings

YouTube says the default video privacy setting for creators aged 13–17 is Private. For creators aged 18 or older, the default is Public. Creators can change the visibility for individual uploads and can configure upload defaults in YouTube Studio.

Always review the final setting rather than relying on a remembered default, especially when handling client, family, financial, medical, or unreleased material.

Which Visibility Setting Should You Choose?

GoalCommon ChoiceImportant Limitation
Reach the general YouTube audiencePublicPublic status does not guarantee impressions or notifications
Share a preview through a linkUnlistedThe link can be forwarded to anyone
Restrict access to named accountsPrivateComments and ordinary embedding are unavailable
Release automatically laterScheduledThe video remains private until the selected time
Create a shared launch eventScheduled PremierePremiere is a public-release format, not a private sharing setting

Visibility and YouTube Checks

Private and Unlisted status does not prevent YouTube from running YouTube Checks. YouTube systems and human reviewers may review videos under every visibility setting for copyright, ad suitability, and abuse-prevention purposes.

Uploading a video privately does not create attorney-client privilege, confidentiality, encryption, or a promise that only the uploader's invited viewers can technically process the file.

Common Video-Visibility Mistakes

  • Treating Unlisted as password-protected or confidential.
  • Assuming Public guarantees search placement or recommendations.
  • Sharing a Private video's ordinary URL without inviting the viewer's account.
  • Expecting comments on a Private video.
  • Forgetting that an Unlisted video can be reshared.
  • Publishing before copyright and ad-suitability checks finish.
  • Confusing visibility with audience designation such as Made for Kids.
  • Assuming a scheduled video is publicly accessible before its release.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between visibility and privacy?

YouTube commonly calls Public, Unlisted, and Private privacy settings, while Studio labels the control Visibility. Both refer to who can access the video and where it can appear.

Can YouTube review a Private video?

Yes. YouTube says its systems and human reviewers may review Private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.

Does changing visibility create a new video URL?

No. Changing the setting normally preserves the existing upload and URL.

Is Scheduled a permanent privacy level?

No. It is a publishing instruction that keeps the video private until YouTube makes it Public at the chosen date and time.
