YouTube Jewels
YouTube Jewels are a prepaid virtual currency, purchasable inside the YouTube mobile app, that viewers spend to send animated "Gifts" on eligible live streams. When a viewer sends a Gift, the creator earns Rubies — YouTube's unit for calculating gift-based earnings. Jewels themselves have no value to a creator directly; they're what the viewer buys, not what the creator receives.
If you're a live-streaming creator trying to figure out whether this is worth turning on, this entry walks through how the mechanic actually works, who currently qualifies, and — just as importantly — what's still unsettled about the rollout.
How YouTube Jewels work: the three-part chain
The naming is genuinely confusing at first, so it helps to think of it as a straight line:
- Jewels — the currency. Viewers buy Jewels in preset bundles through the YouTube mobile app. Jewels don't expire (unless they're bonus/promotional Jewels tied to a specific offer).
- Gifts — what Jewels buy. A Gift is an animated item — a sticker, effect, or combo — that a viewer sends during a live stream. It's the officially branded name for the whole mechanic: "Gifts, powered by Jewels."
- Rubies — what creators earn. When a Gift is sent, the creator's channel earns Rubies. In the original US rollout, YouTube stated 1 Ruby = $0.01 USD. There is no fixed, guaranteed revenue share the way there is for Super Chat or channel memberships — the payout depends on which Jewels bundle the viewer purchased and whatever promotions were active, and YouTube itself has said this openly.
Gifts appear as overlays directly on top of the video feed — a visually different placement than Super Stickers, which show up in the live chat panel alongside comments.
YouTube Jewels vs. YouTube Gifts
These two terms get used almost interchangeably in casual creator conversation, but they refer to different parts of the same system. Here's the actual relationship, based on YouTube's own documentation:
| YouTube Jewels | YouTube Gifts | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The virtual currency viewers purchase | The animated item viewers send, bought with Jewels |
| Who buys/uses it | Viewers | Viewers send it; creators receive the resulting Rubies |
| Where you get it | YouTube mobile app only | Selected from a "Gift" picker during an eligible live stream |
| Can it exist without the other? | Jewels can also be spent on "Hype" (see below), not just Gifts | Gifts cannot be sent without spending Jewels |
| Official branding | Referred to as "Jewels" | Officially called "Gifts, powered by Jewels" |
In short: Jewels is the wallet, Gifts is what you spend it on. They're not competing features — they're two halves of one system. For a deeper breakdown of the Gifts side specifically (gift types, how they display, viewer experience), see YouTube Gifts.
Jewels aren't only for live-stream gifting
Less widely reported: Jewels can also power "Hype," a separate mechanic where viewers spend Jewels to boost a regular (non-live) video's position on a hype leaderboard, going beyond the normal free-hype limit. This is a distinct use case from live-stream Gifts, is available in far fewer countries, and shouldn't be confused with the gifting mechanic covered above.
Who can use YouTube Jewels (creator eligibility)
To receive Rubies from Gifts, a creator must:
- Be an active member of the YouTube Partner Program
- Accept YouTube's Virtual Items (VI) Module in YouTube Studio (Earn hub → Supers & gifts tab → Turn on gifts)
- Complete identity verification (YouTube maintains a dedicated help page for this step)
- Be streaming live with chat/comments enabled
Gifts are not available on:
- Age-restricted videos
- Unlisted or private videos
- Made for Kids content
- Streams running a YouTube Giving fundraiser
- Streams with live chat or comments turned off
A trade-off worth knowing before you turn this on: accepting the Virtual Items Module and enabling Gifts automatically disables Super Stickers on your channel. It's a hard switch, not a parallel option — any audience habit built around buying Super Stickers on your channel doesn't carry over. Weigh that against Gifts' different (overlay-based, in-video) placement before opting in.
Country availability — check this yourself, it changes often
This is the area where honesty matters most: YouTube's own help pages currently show two different country lists for creator eligibility — one shorter (around 30 countries) and one substantially longer (60+ countries and territories, including the US, UK, most of the EU, India, and Japan). Independent reporting through mid-2026 confirms staged additions including Canada (February 2026) and Japan (July 2026), with Indonesia receiving the same mechanic under a different name, "Crystals," in April 2026.
Because the rollout is actively expanding and YouTube's own documentation hasn't fully caught up with itself, don't treat any published country list — including this one — as current. Check the Supers & gifts tab in YouTube Studio directly to see your channel's real-time eligibility.
Jewels purchase limits (what your viewers are working with)
- Combined daily spending cap across Jewels, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks: up to $500/day and $2,000/week (or local equivalent)
- Maximum of 30,000 Jewels held in an account at once
- Jewels are non-refundable
- Viewers must be 18 or older to purchase
Gift types
Not all Gifts look or behave the same. YouTube's current categories are:
- Standard gifts — the baseline sendable items, some with brief interactive effects (marked with a purple sparkle icon)
- Gift effects — AR-style animations that blend into the creator's real-world stream environment (rolled out starting August 2025)
- Limited-time gifts — seasonal or event-themed designs
- Gift combos — repeat-sending the same gift in a streak, with a visible combo counter for the whole stream to see
Current limitations and open questions
To be transparent about the state of this feature as of mid-2026:
- Country availability is a genuine patchwork, expanding market by market, and YouTube's own help documentation currently disagrees with itself on the exact list.
- Whether horizontal live streams are eligible is stated inconsistently across YouTube's own help pages — the practical reality appears to be that horizontal streams are now included, but this hasn't been cleanly corrected in all official documentation.
- The exact Jewels-to-Ruby conversion isn't fixed or guaranteed, and it's unclear whether the "1 Ruby = $0.01" figure confirmed at the original US launch applies uniformly to every newly added, non-USD market.
- Some markets use a different brand name for the same underlying currency (Indonesia's "Crystals"), which suggests this may not be a single unified global product name going forward.
- Specific Jewels bundle pricing is not something we could confirm against a current, official primary source, and YouTube's own terms note that bundle sizes and prices can change at its discretion — treat any specific price figures you see elsewhere with caution.

Is YouTube Jewels the same as YouTube Gifts?
No, though they're often used interchangeably. Jewels is the currency viewers purchase; Gifts is the animated item viewers send using that currency. You can't send a Gift without spending Jewels, and (aside from the separate "Hype" feature) Jewels don't have another use.
Do I need to be in the YouTube Partner Program to earn from Jewels?
Yes. You must be an active YPP member, accept YouTube's Virtual Items Module in YouTube Studio, and complete identity verification before you can receive Rubies from Gifts sent with Jewels.
Will turning on Gifts affect my other monetization features?
Yes, in at least one confirmed way: enabling Gifts (via the Virtual Items Module) automatically disables Super Stickers on your channel. It does not appear to affect Super Chat, Super Thanks, or channel memberships based on current documentation, but always check YouTube Studio's Supers & gifts tab for your channel's current setup before assuming.
