Color Correction

Color correction is the technical process of adjusting video so exposure, white balance, contrast, saturation, and color relationships appear accurate and consistent. It is used to fix recording problems, normalize footage from different cameras, and prepare clips for a creative color grade.

Correction aims to create a reliable starting point. The image does not have to look neutral or ordinary forever, but skin tones, white balance, brightness, and shot-to-shot continuity should behave intentionally rather than change because of camera mistakes.

What color correction changes

A color-correction pass commonly adjusts:

  • Exposure: Overall brightness and the placement of shadows, midtones, and highlights.
  • White balance: Temperature and tint corrections that make neutral objects neutral.
  • Contrast: The separation between dark and bright values.
  • Black and white levels: The darkest and brightest usable points in the image.
  • Saturation: The intensity of color.
  • Shot matching: Consistency between angles, takes, cameras, and lighting conditions.
  • Skin tones and important colors: Targeted adjustments when a specific region is inaccurate.
  • Color-space interpretation: Ensuring Log, RAW, HDR, and standard footage are transformed into the intended working and output space.

The exact workflow depends on the camera format and editing software. A Log clip may first need color management or a technical transform, while standard Rec.709 footage may already look close to its intended display result.

Color correction vs. color grading

The same tools can be used for both, but the goals differ.

In real editing, the boundary is not absolute. Increasing contrast may be corrective in one shot and stylistic in another. The distinction is useful because it keeps technical problems from being hidden under a preset.

A practical color-correction workflow

1. Confirm color management

Before moving sliders, identify the camera color space, gamma, bit depth, and intended delivery format. A clip recorded in Log should not be judged as if its flat appearance were an exposure failure.

Modern editing software can automatically interpret many camera formats, apply input transforms, and manage wide-gamut timelines. Incorrect interpretation can create clipped highlights, crushed blacks, or unexpected saturation before manual correction begins.

2. Correct exposure

Use the image and video scopes to place brightness where it belongs. Adjust the overall level, then refine shadows, midtones, highlights, blacks, and whites.

Exposure correction has limits. If highlights were clipped during recording, lowering them does not recreate the missing texture. If shadows contain little signal, lifting them may reveal noise and compression artifacts. Good dynamic range and accurate capture provide more room to work.

3. Correct white balance and tint

Adjust temperature and green-magenta tint until neutral objects, skin, and known colors look appropriate. A calibrated gray reference can provide a stronger starting point than guessing from a white wall or clothing item.

Mixed lighting may require masks or secondary corrections because one global setting cannot neutralize two different light sources at once.

4. Set contrast and saturation

Once exposure and white balance are stable, refine contrast and color intensity. Check that faces, logos, products, and backgrounds are not becoming unnaturally saturated.

Saturation controls do not affect all colors equally in perceived terms. More advanced tools can adjust hue versus hue, hue versus saturation, and luminance ranges selectively.

5. Match shots

Compare adjacent clips, not just individual frames. Cameras may differ in exposure, lens transmission, color science, ISO, and white balance even when recorded in the same room.

A sequence should not visibly jump in brightness or color every time the edit changes angles unless that shift is intentional.

6. Apply secondary corrections

A primary correction affects the full image. A secondary correction isolates a color, brightness range, mask, tracked object, face, sky, product, or other region.

Secondary tools are useful for:

  • Correcting skin without changing the background.
  • Reducing an overly saturated shirt or wall.
  • Recovering a bright window as far as the recorded data allows.
  • Matching the color of a product across shots.
  • Brightening a face with a tracked window.

Scopes do not replace a properly adjusted monitor or visual judgment. They provide objective measurements that remain useful when room lighting, display settings, or visual adaptation make the image misleading.

Primary and secondary correction

Primary correction changes the image broadly. Exposure, temperature, tint, contrast, saturation, lift, gamma, and gain are common primary controls.

Secondary correction targets part of the image. It may use a color qualifier, luminance key, mask, tracked window, depth map, or subject selection.

The terms do not mean first-quality and second-quality correction. They describe the scope of the adjustment.

LUTs and color correction

A LUT, or lookup table, maps input color values to output values. LUTs can be useful for technical transforms, monitoring, or creative starting points, but they do not analyze the clip.

A LUT cannot know that one shot is underexposed, another has the wrong color temperature, and a third contains clipped highlights. Applying the same LUT to every clip does not replace correction and shot matching.

Technical camera LUTs also expect specific input conditions. A LUT designed for one Log curve or color space may produce incorrect contrast and color when applied to a different format.

  • Correcting Log footage before confirming the input transform.
  • Trusting an uncalibrated screen without checking scopes.
  • Setting black and white points so aggressively that detail clips.
  • Increasing saturation to compensate for incorrect white balance.
  • Correcting each shot alone instead of checking the edited sequence.
  • Using skin-tone guide lines as an absolute rule regardless of ethnicity, lighting, makeup, or creative intent.
  • Applying a LUT and assuming the footage is now corrected.
  • Trying to recover information the camera never recorded.

Frequently asked questions

Should color correction come before color grading?

Usually yes. A technically stable, matched sequence gives the creative grade predictable material to work with. Color-managed workflows can combine the steps, but the corrective goal still needs attention.

Can color correction fix overexposed video?

It can lower bright recorded values, but it cannot restore detail that was clipped to a flat maximum value. RAW and high-bit-depth recording may preserve more highlight information, but no format recovers data that was never captured.

Is white balance part of color correction?

Yes. Temperature and tint adjustments are fundamental corrective controls, although white balance can also be changed creatively.

Do I need a calibrated monitor?
