Green Screen
A green screen is a solid green backdrop filmed behind a subject so the background can be selected and replaced during editing. The removal process is called chroma key compositing.
Green screen is widely used for virtual sets, weather presentations, gaming videos, tutorials, product demonstrations, comedy, visual effects, and short-form content. It can place a creator in front of a screen recording, graphic, landscape, animation, or entirely fictional environment.
The green material itself does not remove the background. Editing software identifies a chosen range of green values, makes those pixels transparent, and composites the subject over another layer.

Move the subject away from the screen when space allows. Separation helps:

Correct exposure and white balance
Do not overexpose the screen until it loses useful color information, and do not underexpose it until noise and unevenness become prominent. Expose the subject for healthy skin and product detail while keeping the screen consistent.
Set a stable white balance rather than allowing automatic white balance to drift during the take. Changes in color can cause the selected key to behave differently from one moment to the next.
Suitable shutter speed and focus
Heavy motion blur blends the subject's edge with the green background. A suitable shutter speed preserves the motion style while giving the keyer enough edge information.
Keep the subject in focus. A slightly soft background may help, but soft hair or clothing edges caused by missed focus remain difficult to separate cleanly.
Basic green-screen workflow
- Choose a screen color that does not appear in the subject.
- Stretch or smooth the backdrop.
- Light the screen evenly.
- Move the subject forward to reduce shadows and spill.
- Light and expose the subject independently.
- Lock focus, exposure, and white balance when practical.
- Record at sufficient resolution and quality for the intended composite.
