Proxy Files

Proxy files are lightweight copies of original video clips that an editor uses temporarily to make playback, scrubbing, multicamera editing, and effects work more smoothly. A proxy usually has a lower video resolution, lower video bitrate, or easier-to-decode video codec than the camera original.

The editing application keeps each proxy linked to its full-quality source. The creator makes the same cuts and timing decisions either way, then switches back to the original media for color work, quality checks, and the final export.

A proxy is therefore a stand-in, not a replacement master. It is created for workflow speed rather than final image quality.

How a proxy workflow works

A typical proxy workflow follows these steps:

  1. Import the original camera files into the editing project.
  2. Generate smaller or less demanding copies through the editor or an external encoder.
  3. Attach each proxy to its matching original clip.
  4. Edit with proxy playback enabled.
  5. Toggle back to full-resolution media when detail matters.
  6. Export from the original media unless a low-resolution proxy export is intentionally selected.

The timeline does not need to be rebuilt when the editor switches media. Cuts, transitions, audio edits, keyframes, titles, and effects remain tied to the clip references in the project.

Why creators use proxy files

Smoother playback

Highly compressed 4K, 6K, 8K, 10-bit, Long GOP, or multicamera footage can be difficult for a computer to decode in real time. The editor may stutter, skip preview frames, or respond slowly even when the final recorded files are healthy.

A proxy reduces that workload. It can make the playhead more responsive and allow the creator to judge pacing without waiting for the computer to catch up.

Faster editing on modest hardware

Proxies let creators work on laptops, older desktops, remote systems, or storage drives that would struggle with the originals. This can delay the need for a hardware upgrade and make travel editing more practical.

Easier collaboration

Smaller files are faster to upload and download. An editor can receive proxies while the full-resolution media remains with the creator, on shared storage, or in a separate transfer. The project can later reconnect to the originals for finishing.

Better multicamera performance

Playing several high-resolution camera angles at once multiplies the decoding and storage demand. Proxy versions can make interviews, podcasts, live-event edits, and reaction videos far easier to monitor.

A proxy can look soft, blocky, or less color-accurate without harming the final result, provided the original media remains linked and is used for export.

Proxy files vs. transcoding and optimized media

A proxy is created through transcoding, but not every transcode is a proxy.

  • Proxy: A lightweight alternate file linked to a higher-quality original.
  • Optimized media: A new editing-friendly version that may become the primary working file rather than a toggleable stand-in.
  • Mezzanine transcode: A high-quality intermediate file used for editing, effects, or transfer between applications.
  • Preview file: A temporary rendered result created from a section of the timeline to improve playback.
  • Delivery file: The completed video encoded for YouTube, a client, broadcast, or another destination.

Different editing applications use these terms somewhat differently. The defining idea of a proxy is the maintained relationship between the lightweight file and its original source.

What makes a good proxy format?

A useful proxy balances three goals:

  • Easy decoding: Intraframe editing codecs are often smoother than heavily compressed delivery codecs.
  • Manageable file size: The files must be small enough to store and transfer conveniently.
  • Reliable relinking: Frame rate, duration, audio configuration, timecode, and clip identity should remain compatible with the originals.

Common proxy choices include ProRes Proxy, DNxHR LB, and other editor-supported presets. Adobe Premiere's current default proxy preset uses ProRes QuickTime Proxy at a reduced frame size, although creators can choose other presets.

A very low-bitrate H.264 file may be small, but it can still be harder to decode than a larger editing codec. Smallest is not always fastest.

Do proxies affect final export quality?

Normally, no. Major editors are designed to use the original full-resolution media when rendering and exporting the final program.

Adobe Premiere, for example, uses full-resolution media by default even if proxy playback is enabled. A creator must explicitly choose Use Proxies in the export settings to create an output from proxy media.

Still, creators should verify the following before delivery:

  • Every original file is online and correctly attached.
  • No proxy watermark appears in the final output.
  • High-resolution details, reframing, stabilization, and color adjustments are reviewed using originals.
  • The export settings match the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec.

When creators may not need proxies

Proxies add setup time and consume storage, so they are not necessary for every project. A creator may skip them when:

  • The source footage already plays smoothly.
  • The project uses only a few short clips.
  • The computer can decode the source codec without dropped preview frames.
  • The original files are already recorded in an editing-friendly codec.
  • The deadline is too short for proxy generation to provide a net benefit.

Testing one representative clip is often better than assuming every 4K project needs proxies.

Common proxy-file mistakes

  • Deleting the originals: A proxy is not a full-quality archive or camera-master backup.
  • Exporting proxies accidentally: An explicit proxy-export setting can create a lower-quality final file.
  • Using mismatched frame rates: Incorrect proxy settings can cause relinking or sync problems.
  • Judging sharpness from proxies: Low-resolution playback is not a reliable final-quality check.
  • Confusing playback lag with damaged footage: A dropped preview frame does not mean the recorded source frame is missing.
  • Making proxies too compressed: A tiny delivery codec may still edit poorly.
  • Moving files without a relinking plan: Proxies and originals need stable filenames, metadata, or folder organization.
