YouTube Create
YouTube Create is YouTube's standalone, free mobile video editing app for creators. It's a separate download from both the main YouTube app and the YouTube Studio app, built specifically for editing footage into Shorts or long-form videos — with templates, filters, transitions, automatic captions, voiceover recording, a royalty-free music library, and a growing set of generative AI tools — then publishing straight to a YouTube channel.
It launched in beta on Android in September 2023 and expanded to iPhone on December 15, 2025, so it's now genuinely cross-platform. If you've seen older articles calling it "Android-only," that's out of date.
What Is YouTube Create?
YouTube Create is a mobile-first editing app that lets creators go from raw clips to a published YouTube video without leaving Google's ecosystem or paying for a subscription. Google built it after consulting around 3,000 creators, and positions it as a lighter, YouTube-native alternative to third-party editors like CapCut and InShot.
It is not:
- The YouTube app's built-in Shorts camera (which has its own basic effects and, separately, Dream Screen AI backgrounds)
- YouTube Studio or its lightweight in-browser Video Clips/trim tools, which live inside the channel-management dashboard, not a separate app
- A desktop or web app — Google has stated it has no current plans to bring YouTube Create beyond mobile
Is YouTube Create Free?
Yes. It's 100% free to download and use, with no ads inside the editor and no paid tier gating core features, according to YouTube's own Help Center. This is one of the few claims every source agrees on without qualification.
YouTube Create vs. YouTube Studio vs. the YouTube App
Creators frequently mix these three up because they're all part of YouTube's creator toolkit but serve completely different jobs:

If you're building a video from your camera roll with real editing control, that's YouTube Create. If you're trimming a video you've already uploaded or asking a question about your channel's performance, that's YouTube Studio.

AI Tools Inside YouTube Create
YouTube Create's generative AI features are newer additions (rolled out through 2025) and are still labeled experimental by Google:
- Generate video with Veo — Turns a text prompt (up to 900 characters) into a vertical AI video clip, with controls for visual style (11 presets, including Photorealistic and Claymation) and lighting. Currently available on mobile in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United States, prompts in English only.
- Generate image with Nano Banana — Creates images from a text prompt plus up to three reference photos; a generated image can be converted into an 8-second video. Restricted to users 18+ in the same five countries, with prompts accepted in English or Hindi.
- Edit with AI — The closest thing to a "one-tap Short": select up to 25 photos/clips, choose voiceover, music, and captions, and YouTube Create auto-drafts a Short (5 seconds to 5 minutes) you can then refine manually. Available in a wider set of markets (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Türkiye, and the US), with AI voiceover currently limited to Bengali, English, Hindi, and Portuguese.
Don't confuse these with Dream Screen. Dream Screen is a separate AI background-generation feature that debuted alongside YouTube Create in 2023 but lives in the Shorts camera inside the main YouTube app, not inside YouTube Create itself. They share underlying Google Veo technology but are accessed in different places.
It's also worth distinguishing YouTube Create's AI tools from YouTube's algorithmic Shorts features: auto-generated clips and auto-generated Shorts are produced automatically by YouTube from existing long-form video, without a creator manually opening an editing app at all — a fundamentally different workflow from actively generating or editing footage inside YouTube Create.
As with any AI-generated YouTube content, videos made with Veo or Nano Banana inside YouTube Create must follow Community Guidelines and carry disclosure labels marking them as synthetic — worth knowing before you build these clips into a channel governed by YouTube's monetization and policies.

As of this writing, YouTube Create is officially available in 21 markets: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Google notes the list can expand, so check YouTube's own available-locations page if your country isn't listed.
You'll need a Google Account signed in to use the app; anyone with upload access to a channel — including team members with appropriate channel permissions — can use it to prep content for that channel.
YouTube Create vs. CapCut
YouTube Create is Google's answer to ByteDance's CapCut, but the two aren't evenly matched yet:
- Ease and integration: YouTube Create is simpler and publishes straight into your YouTube channel with no export/import step. CapCut offers deeper editing control, a script-to-video generator, and cross-platform (mobile + desktop) editing.
- Scale: Independent data reported by TechCrunch (via Sensor Tower, Q2 2025) shows CapCut with well over 400 million monthly active Android users versus fewer than 1 million for YouTube Create, and roughly 10x the 90-day user retention.
- Momentum: YouTube Create's user base grew faster year-over-year (+28%) than CapCut's (+9%) in the same period, suggesting it's gaining ground even from a small base — likely helped by the December 2025 iOS launch.
- Music licensing: Both apps offer YouTube-safe royalty-free music, but content built from YouTube's own Audio Library inside YouTube Create carries less risk of a copyright claim or Content ID match than pulling in outside audio, since the tracks are pre-cleared for YouTube use.
Bottom line: if you're editing exclusively for YouTube and want the fastest camera-roll-to-published-video path, YouTube Create is a reasonable free default. If you want more advanced editing, templates for multiple platforms, or a script-to-video generator, CapCut remains more full-featured.
